Pintura naif da autoria de um artista local, retratando uma “figura típica” da Nazaré de meados do século XX, que
desenvolvia atividade quer no mar quer na agricultura, demonstrando a
articulação entre ambas as atividades económicas.
Num enquadramento rural,
possivelmente nos Caixins, onde os “Leões” tinham as suas hortas, surge em
primeiro plano Fortunato Pimpão, descalço e vestindo o traje tradicional,
segurando na mão esquerda um molho de nabos e, na direita, uma vara que o
auxiliaria na caminhada.
A alcunha de “Leões”,
atribuída aos irmãos Fortunato e António Pimpão, deve-se ao facto de ambos
serem muito robustos, fortes e vigorosos, surgindo retratados em vários postais
da época.
Coelho
da Silva (1909-1995), ourives,
pintor e escultor, foi um autodidacta. Também conhecido por “Vinho Verde”,
devido à terra da sua natalidade – “Baltar”, perto do Porto e região produtora
de vinho verde, Coelho da Silva trabalhou com vários materiais, desde o barro
cozido, o cobre martelado ou a pintura.
Os
temas escolhidos pelo autor registam, sobretudo, motivos de interesse etnográfico
ligados ao quotidiano das gentes da Nazaré e suas figuras populares, como é o
caso da obra agora apresentada, “O Leão” (Fortunato Pimpão).
A
ilustrar a vertente marítima do trabalho dos “Leões”, apresenta-se ainda um postal
(MDJM inv. 362 BPI, Oferta de José Caria Macatrão, 1975)
The painting by local artist in the style of Naïve art,
shows a typical figure of Nazaré from the middle of the XXth century, depicting
maritime and agricultural activities, and demonstrating the link between
both.
It is set in the countryside, possibly at Caixins, where “Lions” had
their farming land. In the foreground is Fortunato Pimpão, wearing traditional costume,
holding in the left hand a bunch of turnips, and in the right hand a walking
stick.
Nicknamed “Lions” for their strong, robust qualities and vigorous
character, brothers Fortunato and António Pimpão were often featured on
postcards of the period.
Coelho da Silva (1909-1995) was a self-taught goldsmith, painter and
sculptor.
He was also known as “Vinho Verde” as a reminder of the place where he
was born - Baltar, close to Porto , the region
famous for the production of “Vinho Verde” wine. Coelho da Silva worked with
different materials, creating art objects in ceramics, repoussé and paintings.
The themes chosen by the artist have ethnographic interest since they
show everyday life of the people of Nazaré and its popular figures, as
represented in the painting “The Lion” (Fortunato Pimpão).
